Small Professor is a producer from Philly who has been releasing music for over a decade. He’s collaborated with everyone from Curly Castro to Guilty Simpson, and he’s been part of groups like Them That Do. Last year, we got familiar with a lot of his solo work through his series of A Jawn Supreme releases. Earlier this year, he debuted a new project called the seven sins (still haunt me at night) [v.7]. Now he’s back with the second volume in this series, the seven sins (still haunt me at night) [v.6].

While the first volume was a little more ambiguous with its direct interaction with the seven sins, v.6 is a bit easier to read in terms of the theme, with some key vocal clips very clearly giving you examples of pride, envy, lust, and so on. This is all well and good and gives you the framework for the project, but as with any Small Pro project, this really boils down to the production. Pro is a veteran who has been at this for a while, and this time there aren’t any wild surprises or shifts in style, but you do get plenty of incredibly solid and soulful beats that allow you to get into your head as a listener and maybe contemplate a few things, maybe check in and see how you’re doing with your own personal life in regards to these sins while some jazz piano and funky drums set the groove for you. This time around it’s a very introspective project.

the seven sins (still haunt me at night) [v.6] is an interesting companion piece to the first volume in this new series. We now have a much wider range of material and have opened up what these different interpretations of the seven sins can sound like, depending on Small Professor’s approach.
