Demae - Life Works Out...Usually
Written by Chi Chi Thalken on September 9, 2020
Demae is a name you might not know yet, but the London artist has been around for a minute, formerly working under the name Bubblerap and part of the group Hawk House. More recently, she’s also been working as a backup vocalist for Fatima. Now she’s stepping out under her new/old name and slowing things down to release her debut EP as Demae, Life Works Out…Usually.
While previous projects might have been a bit more straight-up hip hop, as Demae, she’s now leaning a bit more in the neo-soul direction, slowing things down, getting more intimate with her songwriting, and adding a splash of jazz to the proceedings as well.

Amergio Gazaway is an artist originally from in Nashville, but now based in Berkeley. He initially made a splash with a series of releases of mashups, creating the jam sessions in his head that never happened in real life, with releases like Fela Soul and The Miseducation of Eunice Waymon. In the past couple of years, though, he’s been focused on other types of projects, releasing some video game soundtracks, producing for up-and-coming artists like Xiomara, and instrumental projects.

She’s relatively new to the scene, but she’s been catching ears with her music, most notably producers Ricky Reed and Nate Mercereau, who liked what they heard so much that they are both using their own labels to jointly release her EP, These Days.
Taking her name from a nickname her father gave her as a child to encourage her to find her inner strength, St.

Earoh - JUCO
Written by Chi Chi Thalken on September 3, 2020
Earoh is a producer from Los Angeles who made a splash in 2018 when he released his debut full-length album, Ambien Moon. Since that time, he’s released a few singles, contributed to comps, and put together some mixes, but we haven’t gotten a proper follow-up to Ambien Moon. That is, until now, when Earoh delivers hi new EP, JUCO.
For JUCO, Earoh is taking inspiration from college athletics, asking himself questions about resting on your laurels, and how to turn notions of self-sabotage into moments of inspiration.

Written by Chi Chi Thalken on September 2, 2020
The Other Guys are the D.C. production duo known for their work with Von Pea, Substantial, Rob Cave, and others, as well as their own solo work. A little over a year ago, they released an EP called Summer in Analog, launching a series of instrumental EPs meant to evoke the sound of the different seasons. Now, you might have though that the release of Spring in Analog earlier this year was the conclusion of this series, but The Other Guys had different ideas, now releasing another EP, Summer in Analog: Season 2.

Nickelman - Butterwax
Written by Chi Chi Thalken on September 2, 2020
URBNET might be a Canadian label, but they do occasionally look outside of their home country for some dope hip hop. Last year, they looked all the way to Osaka, Japan, to welcome a producer named Nickelman to their roster, when he released the album Elements. Now he’s back with a new project, Butterwax.
There is always a question when a hip hop producer releases an album as to what type of release it’s going to be.

Boom Bap Babies - Smooth Breeze EP
Written by Chi Chi Thalken on September 1, 2020
Boom Bap Babies is a new project from a couple of artists that have been a part of the Birmingham scene for a while, producer RyNea Soul and emcee Shaun Judah. The two have worked together before on different projects, but this is their first time working officially as a duo. They now make their first statement with Smooth Breeze EP.
The first thing that hit me about this EP is just how accessible and easy this music is to listen to.

LoveChild - EP
Written by Chi Chi Thalken on September 1, 2020
LoveChild is a fairly new project from Bay Area artists and real life couple Felili and Trailer Limon. Both artists have been making music for some time, with Limon working as part of the group The Pendletons alongside E Da Boss as well as a solo artist. Now after all this time of being in each other’s lives and making music separately, we finally get them as a duo with their debut EP.
