Sole has been making and releasing music for over twenty years, and for all of his different phases and side projects and whatnot, he’s never shown any signs of slowing down. Case in point, less than a month removed from dropping his latest full-length album with DJ Pain 1, Post American Studies, he’s now back with a rarities and B-sides collection, No Gods No Master Gardeners 2.0.

No Gods No Master Gardeners 2.0 is a collection of unreleased tracks and alternate versions of songs, mostly from the Let Them Eat Sand, Destituent and MBFX era. While projects like Post American Studies are fairly accessible, with a general pop song format helping listeners ease into more challenging lyricism, NGNMG 2.0 is much more for the hardcore fans. These are alternate versions and unreleased songs for a reason, mostly because they are pretty experimental and weird. You gotta be willing to strap yourself in and just go on the journey with Sole, wherever it takes you. That said, if you’re ready to pair Sole’s self-reflexive and politically charged lyrics with avantgarde electronic production and a few other styles of music you don’t always get to hear him mess with, this will be your jam. All of it is very thought provoking, and it’s cool to hear Sole step out of his usually style a few times across this collection, such as on “Life is Ill (Folk Punk Version).” My personal favorite is “Viruses,” because I didn’t know just how dope it would be to hear Sole anarchist lyrics paired with a house beat that you can really dance to. I also appreciate the ‘70s funk of the title track, which has a more playful bounce to it than you usually hear from Sole.

No Gods No Master Gardeners 2.0 delivers exactly what you want from a rarities collection from Sole. You still get his voice, his lyricism, and his point of view coming through, but you get to hear it in different contexts than you might be used to. It’s a must have for any longtime fan.
