One of the few things you can count in this world is that come December, you’re going to get a Martian XMAS album from Vancouver emcee/producer Moka Only. This year marks the 13th edition in the series, and he’s showing now signs of slowing down.

If you’re new to the Martian XMAS series, don’t expect a lot of actual holiday songs, or sleigh bells, or any of your other typical signifiers you get on Christmas albums. Instead, just expect a winter-ish album from Moka Only, one of the most prolific artists of the last twenty-plus years. There’s nothing unusual or unexpected, just the stuff you know you like from Moka, with plenty of laid-back jazz and R&B influenced hip hop for your listening pleasure. The album does lack a real stand out moment, but on the other hand, there’s not a low moment. If you’re already a Moka Only fan, it won’t take much to sell you on this album, but if you’ve never heard him before, I don’t know that this album will necessarily blow anyone away and win new fans. All in all though, we get another solid Moka Only album for the holidays, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Martian XMAS 2017 is the latest is a very long line of Moka Only albums, not just in this particular series, but in his very lengthy discography. It’s not a standout addition, but it is just another solid hip hop album from a very prolific artist who keeps churning them out after all these years.
