Laboreal is a producer based Nantes, France. He used to make music under the name of Pix, but switched to Laboreal in 2013, which also marked a change in style for him. He last release came out just about one year ago, when he released the album Le Carre Bleu, a challenging album that kept you on your toes. Now he comes back with an even bolder experimental project, Frequence.

First things first – this album requires a good deal of patience, and it certainly won’t be for everyone. That said, if you do take the time and effort to listen to Frequence and let it soak in, you will be rewarded with one of the most unique listening experiences of 2018. The album is so named because Laboreal composed everything using the same frequency of 454 Hz, a frequency he found to be light and connects with the heart more than the mind. What this means in a more practical sense is that Laboreal has set out to show just how much different music can exist on one frequency. Over the course of the album, we move from ambient to downtempo to house to IDM and everything in between. Laboreal is in no hurry to move from one genre to the next, and often spends more time exploring the areas in between these genres, where these compositions can exist in their spaces without adhering to any sort of rules. It’s an album that can be enjoyed as an ambient, atmospheric experience, but it can also be enjoyed listening to very closely, as you follow along all the nooks and crannies of experimental electronic music that Laboreal travels through as he guides you his work. The real key to all of this is the time and passion spent by Laboreal to make sure not only that he had some interesting songs, but that he had an album that was specifically tailored to work from start to finish, to take you on a very specific journey as he continues to build and develop musical conversations as you go from song to song.

Frequence is certainly a unique listening experience, but if you’ve got the patience and you’re feeling adventurous, Laboreal will certainly reward anyone willing to take the risk.
