Korea Town Acid is a producer born in Seoul, but now based in Toronto. She released her first full-length album, Metamorphosis, on URBNET in 2021. Not one to rest on her laurels, she turned right back around and gave us another album, Cosmos, just this past March. Well, she’s already back once again, this time with another full-length album, Elephant in the Room.

In a short amount of time, Korea Town Acid has given us a lot of different looks with her releases. She’s shown us that she can make downtempo music, hip hop and pop friendly beats, and she can produce dance projects meant for the clubs. With Elephant in the Room, Korea Town Acid now gives us her most experimental and challenging release to date. It is still danceable, with drum and bass, jungle, house, and other thumping beats driving a large chunk of the album. Outside of that, though, this is a pretty avantgarde album, with lots of glitches and other moments of discord living right alongside those pretty melodies that are easy to digest. She’s also thrown any sense of the traditional pop song structure out of the window. Often it feels like a lot of these tracks started as experimental jam sessions and KTA just followed the inspiration and let the happy accidents dictate where the music went. The good news here is that KTA has been putting in the work and getting a lot of experience in the short time she’s been releasing music, so this album doesn’t come across as self-indulgent or just noise for the sake of noise. It’s clear that she was in a comfortable enough position with herself as an artist that she could now push herself to experiment and figure out when she had a success on her hands with each track. As a result, this is an album that is danceable, but also very cerebral, and it will benefit from multiple listens to pick up all of the interesting nuances and unexpected elements that KTA has included throughout.

Elephant in the Room won’t be for everyone. But for those willing to take a chance on an experimental electronic album from a young artist who is really coming into her own the past couple of years, you will be greatly rewarded.
