Los Angeles producer B. Bravo made a splash in the spring of 2017, when he released his solo album, Paradise, which featured some fantastic electro-boogie and G-Funk. Amongst the guests on that album were Portland vocalist Reva Devito and Bay Area vocalist Rajai. Having already paired up with Devito to drop another excellent album as Umii, Bravo now takes the time to work with Rojai on a full-length album, this time using the name Kool Customer.

If you’ve spent the time with his last two projects, you know exactly what you’re getting from B. Bravo, which is some excellent throwback electro-boogie, with all sorts of great work on the keyboards, talk box, and drum machines to deliver on a funky, funky good time. When working with Devito, he had a partner who fits into the classic mold of a pop singer, with a big voice and hooks to match. In working with Rojai, we get someone who isn’t quite as easily defined. He’s a vocalist, and he can rap, but he doesn’t necessarily have the big voice or personality that immediately sells you on his talent. It’s more about style, subtlety, and smoothness with Rojai, who uses the natural rasp of his voice and good tone to keep the music moving. Between Bravo and Rojai, the music is always bouncing and moving, and the party never stops once you press play on track one. It’s an album that will sound great pumping from your car stereo as you cruise around as summer turns to fall, and will absolutely get people shaking their things on the dance floor. This is all about two veteran musicians having fun together, making a throwback party album that is still musically challenging and rewarding.

Sometimes albums are easy to listen to, but that doesn’t mean that they are “simple” or “less than.” It just means that sometimes you don’t need to overthink, and you just want to have fun with friends and collaborators and make some great funk and R&B together. That’s exactly what Rojai and B. Bravo have done with the Kool Customer album.
