GrandAce is an artist from the Cincinnati area that has been releasing music for the last couple of years, mostly in the form of EPs, singles, and beat tapes. His last EP, Feel Good, came out a little over a year ago. Now he comes back with another impressive project, Also Codachrome EP.

GrandAce recorded Also Codachrome as a way to work through his feelings of imposter syndrome as he approaches college graduation. As you listen to this EP, you might find yourself wondering where GrandAce gets that idea, since he’s not only doing a little bit of everything and doing it well, he’s also delivering an EP with good vision to it. GrandAce has a great voice, and he successfully navigates his way through each song both singing and rapping, and sometimes in between, but always with a great sense of melody and phrasing, either fitting nicely in the pocket of the groove or playing against in really interesting ways. He’s also a great musician and producer, creating these really warm soundscapes built around electric piano, synthesizer, bass, drums, and vocal harmonies. Ultimately, though, what makes this EP so special is how open and honest he’s being with his music, capturing the uncertainty and uneasy feelings that come with starting a new chapter in your life, how it can be exciting one minute and paralyzing the next. Because of this, even though this is just a five song EP, it often feels like you’re listening to a full-length album, because GrandAce has take you on such an emotional journey with his music.

I don’t know what the world has in store for GrandAce as he graduates college and steps out in the “real world,” but I do know that he’s a talented musician who has grown a lot in the past couple of years, and Also Codachrome is his best work yet.
