In what is supposed to be a little giveaway four-song EP, Dam-Funk accidentally reasserts himself as one of the most talented and interesting musicians working today. His style is rooted in the electro-boogie of the early eighties, but it’s something he’s made all his own.

Just listening to the opening track, “Forever,” with it’s seemingly simple keyboard bass line and down tempo drum beat, I find myself drawn in. On paper, there’s not a lot to it, but it’s just a groove that’s felt so well, and his vocals are stronger than ever. On “Don’t You Know (That This Funk Iz Real),” the lyrics are so generic, it would be easy to attack him as a critic, but I’d rather point out all the interesting keyboard work that’s going on, along with the killer keytar solo that happens, which is all just build up to the way the song falls apart into an interesting mix of noisy feedback amongst keytar improvisation. “Inside Of U,” an instrumental ballad, demonstrates Dam-Funk has some pretty impressive chops on the keys even while bringing in classical and jazz musical vocabulary. Lest you forget what he does best, though, we close things out with the title track, a song that keeps pushing forward with a funky drum beat as keyboards build and build as they mix with a plethora of sci-fi sounds to give us a great futuristic boogie.

InnaFocusedDaze is meant to serve as filler until the next album, but damn it if Dam-Funk didn’t reassert himself as one of the more interesting artists to emerge in the past few years. He can create a song out of the seemingly simplest of elements and make it completely engaging. And he can throw down on the keytar.
