lojii & Swarvy - Due Rent [Blends]

It’s not very often that an artist and label will go back and re-visit an entire full-length album, but that’s exactly what Fresh Selects is doing here. Back in 2017, producer Swarvy got together with emcee Iojii, both from Philly, to make an album called Due Rent. Now living in Los Angeles, Swarvy has revisited the album and remixed it in the style of his Blends series of releases, with lojii coming back to record some new harmonies and whatnot to fit the new style and beats.

There have been a couple of singles since then, but now it’s time for a new EP, Foreigners. As you might surmise from the title of this EP, a good portion of Foreigners is about Illsamar grappling with her identity as a first generation Mexican American immigrant, being filled with the hope and promise of America, and then seeing all the ways in which the country has failed to live up to those expectations and made her feel like she doesn’t belong.

Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes - What Kinda Music

As a very young man, London musician Tom Misch caught a few ears when he released a couple of beat tapes in the mid-2010s. While those beat tapes held some promise, they most certainly didn’t prepare you for his debut album in 2018, Geography, which while retaining some hip hop influence, moved much further into jazz and soul as Misch’s guitar and vocals took center stage. After releasing Geography, Misch connected with United Vibrations member and jazz drummer Yussef Dayes.
