Yung Bae is a producer from Portland, Oregon who has been releasing music for about five years now. Starting in 2014, he’s been releasing a series of albums called Bae. After taking last year off, Yung Bae now returns with Bae 5.

If you read up on Yung Bae, you’re bound to come across buzz words like “Future Funk” and “Vaporwave.” Frankly, I don’t see the need to use terms like this, when what Yung Bae is really doing is just cooking up some killer disco-funk to get all y’all’s asses on the dance floor. Seriously, this album plays out like one awesome deejay set, where you can just shake it loose all night long, getting sweaty on a hot summer night. There are some modern production flourishes here and there, but the backbone of the album is a pulsing drumbeat and a jumping bassline, the kind that immediately speaks to your feet and then moves up through your body. The majority of the album is instrumental, and Yung Bae could have easily carried the whole thing without any vocals, his grooves and song development are more than good enough to carry the load. We do get a few guests, though, including bbno$, Billy Marciafava, Desired, Paper Idol, Flamingosis, Party Pupils, and Macross 82-99. Nobody really takes it to the next level, but most do a decent job of coming in and providing some nice vocal hooks, with Desired doing my favorite job of filling that disco diva role on “What You Need.” My least favorite is “Bad Boy,” with bbno$ and Billy Marciafava, who just feel like they are playing Club Cliché Mad Libs with their rhymes, which are just so bad and obvious, it drags the whole track down for me. It’s definitely the one that I skip past on repeat listens.

Bae 5 is a solid, entertaining album from Yung Bae. He knows how to throw down some nice disco-funk grooves that will not only get the party started, but keep it bumping all night long. Hopefully in the future, the guest artists will be more carefully curated and add something specific to the album, but in the meantime we still have a lot of fun music to dance to.
