At this point in time, I can’t tell you very much about the artist named Scottie Spitten, because he and his label haven’t made much information available. In the way they have done so, it is also indeterminate whether this has been on purpose. All this really means in practical terms is that all we can do is judge his new album, S.C.O.T.T.I.E., on its merits.

What I can tell you is that this is his debut album, it was produced entirely by Radio Galaxy, and it was recorded in Space City, Texas. Radio Galaxy provides some nice minimalist-yet-futuristic-sounding beats, which fits Scottie Spitten’s personality perfectly. It also means that the production, while good, often takes a back seat to Spitten’s lyricism and voice. Spitten has a low, slightly raspy voice, and he spits cleanly and confidently on the mic, with a lot of attention paid to internal rhyme schemes that will remind listeners a little of MF DOOM. Where Spitten really carves out a niche for himself is his penchant for sci-fi and horror-inspired raps. Over the course of the album, we get references to Star Man, Carrie, and Blade Runner, just to name a few. The closest comparison on this angle would be Swamp Thing out of Toronto, but they tend to go back even further to classic Hollywood for their references. All in all, you have an album with a lot of interest to it, with good production and interesting rhymes that will have you listening closely to catch all of the references, punch lines, and hidden meanings packed into each verse. It’s certainly intriguing, to say the least.

I still don’t know who Scottie Spitten is or what he’s all about, but he’s generated enough interest with S.C.O.T.T.I.E. to keep me listening and following to see where he goes from here. In the meantime, you’ve got a fun album with a lot of nerdy references and clever wordplay.
