Tanya Morgan is of course the New York duo of Von Pea and Donwill, who have been making music together for about fifteen years. Last year saw them busy as solo artists, with Donwill releasing his album One Word No Space and Von Pea releasing City For Sale. While they’ve been working together this whole time on each other’s albums and other projects, it’s actually been three years since the last official Tanya Morgan release, YGWY$4. Now under quarantine, they drop in with a quick check-in EP, Be Right Back.

Like many people right now, Tanya Morgan had to put plans on hold as we all figure out the new normal while living through a pandemic. In their own words, “The one’s that we’re leaving you with were made on a whim over the course of 4-5 days. The forced stillness of quarantine isn’t exactly the best environment to create in but the need to write out thoughts and express emotions is more constructive than obsessing over things that can’t be controlled.” So no, this isn’t some grand concept album or anything like that, and it’s not busting out with features, but for right now, Tanya Morgan has put out an EP that will give fans a short little escape, deliver on that classic East Coast boom bap, do a little shit talking, and sneak in a couple of serious messages as well. These two have great chemistry together, as is to be expected, and Von Pea’s production has really come into its own in the past couple of years, delivering some head nodding goodness while they both trade rhymes.

Tanya Morgan deliver exactly what they promised on Be Right Back. It’s a short burst of quality East Coast hip hop that is a lot of fun, delivers with some substance, and then gets out of the way. Hopefully it won’t take long for them to be back, but hey, we’re not going anywhere anytime soon. In the meantime, enjoy some new Tanya Morgan.
