SoulChef is a producer from Auckland who has been putting out music since 2010. The last time we heard from him was a little over a year ago, when he teamed up with emcee Nieve to release an EP called Step Into The Ghost. Now he’s back with a new full-length instrumental album, Home.

It doesn’t take long to understand what Home is all about. SoulChef isn’t doing anything too conceptual here, he’s just bringing big, fun, soulful beats, one right after another. It does lean a little bit more towards beat tape than album, but that’s neither a good nor bad thing, it’s just letting you know where your expectations should lie. And they should lie anywhere you find good grooves that you can just get lost in. Home is full of great soul samples that SoulChef has flipped and turned into beats that will make you want to turn up the volume and get your body moving. There’s enough variety across Home to keep things interesting, and SoulChef makes sure that everything flows together really well from start to finish. SoulChef demonstrates a real knack for melodic hooks, stuff that will immediately stick in your head as the beats play out, and he knows how to develop the beats enough to keep you from falling into any sort of rut. It’s bright, sunny, soulful, and just tons of fun to listen to.

There’s no real secret as to what makes Home enjoyable to listen to. SoulChef knows how to rock a beat, flip a soul sample, and lay down a funky good time for all to enjoy. This will sound great pumping in your car stereo as we cling to these sunny days as we transition into fall.
