Seattle producer/vocalist SassyBlack is a few years into her solo career now, following the split of THEESatisfaction. She’s been releasing a bunch of different projects at a steady pace, including instrumentals and themed EPs. Her latest project is the Black Panther-inspired Wakanda Funk Lounge.

The name of this EP can be a little misleading, in that this is neither a nerdcore release, or strictly a Black Panther-themed EP. That is to say, outside of the last song, “Wakanda Bounce,” you’re not getting a collection of songs directly referencing the Marvel Universe. The other three songs might be inspired in a more general sense, but they could also easily be found on other projects. Now that this distinction is out of the way, we can discuss this EP for what it really is – one of SassyBlack’s most well-rounded releases to date. “Way It Goes (It Is What It Is),” is a New Jack Swing-inspired track that will get your feet shuffling. “Sassy,” is a meditative song about discovering your own self-worth. “While Black,” draws more on house music for inspiration, delivering a smooth dance anthem with a straightforward chorus about Black pride. Then we finally get to the closing track, which incorporates African dance rhythms into her own electronic/R&B production, all while she uses her lyrics to imagine herself part of the powerful mythology of Wakanda, and celebrates it with an appropriate dance.

It’s short and too the point, but Wakanda Funk Lounge is surprisingly well-rounded and fulfilling as a listening experience. While it takes inspiration from Black Panther, it is also much more than just a tribute EP. It’s four songs from an artist who has continued to grow and expand in her solo career. This EP is another step forward for SassyBlack.
