santpoort is the alias of Julien Mier, a producer originally from The Netherlands, but now based in Sydney. He began releasing music in the late 2000s, but as he finished up his run of environmentally themed projects under his own name in the late 2010s, he began to focus more on his santpoort alias. His most recent santpoort release came in May of last year, when he released an EP called cardboard time machine. Now he is back with another EP, a hole in the sun.

If you’ve spent time with santpoort, you’ll have a pretty good idea as to what to expect from a hole in the sun. That’s because santpoort is just staying the course, crafting some beautiful psychedelic electronic music. That said, it’s not really a knock on an artist when you’ve spent years carving out this niche for yourself and have continued to make these gorgeous soundscapes and complex compositions the way that Mier has done. In fact, it’s because santpoort has put in the work over the years that his music is able to sound so effortless, like a gentle breeze coming in from the ocean, making its way through the trees. It’s the type of music that you want to listen to on headphones, where you can press play and escape from the world for just a little while, where you can just let your imagination run free as santpoort puts together these really subtle and nuanced electronic compositions that will just swirl around your head with these light movements and psychedelic effects and layers of sounds that just build expertly.

a hole in the sun is the type of project that can really sneak up on you. santpoort has been at this for a minute, and he’s gotten really good at composing these projects that are really well developed, but also sound so beautiful and easy going, it’s easy to overlook just how much work he puts in.
