s.al, fka Safari Al, is an artist originally form Milwaukee, but he’s calling Minneapolis home these days. He’s been releasing music for over a decade now, striking a unique path as part of the ruby yacht crew. Just this past January, he released a project called THE HEART GUIDES THE MIND…IT IS ITS TARGET. Now he’s back with a short project, more than human?

For this project, s.al is working with producer WON POUND-O, a artist from Maine who has released a number of interesting instrumental projects over the last five years. To listen to more than human?, you’d think that these two had been working together for years, the chemistry is just that natural. s.al has always had a nice singing voice to complement he rhyming skills, and on this project he’s often splitting the difference and finding a nice melodic flow to fit each beat that Won Pound is throwing down. Pound is cooking up some really beautiful avantgarde downtempo beats, the kind that could throw a lesser emcee off kilter, but s.al is navigating the musical terrain like he made the beats himself, always adjusting his flow in just the right way to play off of the production. Lyrically, s.al is opening up the notebook and just spitting from the heart, whether it be speaking out about the injustice he sees in his community, or getting philosophical as he ponders his place in this world both as an artist and as a person who’s just trying to live their best life and affect positive change along the way.

more than human? is short, but it’s impactful. It’s beautiful and soulful, inventive and clever, and just the right amount of music to get things stirring in your head before s.al and Won Pound bounce. Hopefully these two will work together again, because their chemistry together is special.
