Mndsgn. has emerged over this decade as one of the more sought out and respected producers, between some solo instrumental releases and working with artists such as Ivan Ave and Prophet, just to name a couple. Just last year, he released a collection of remixes called Snax. Now, while we still wait on him to have a proper album finished, he tides us over again with a collection that is something of a beat tape, appropriately titled Snaxx.

If you haven’t spent the time with Mndsgn., you might not necessarily get what the big deal is if you just listened to Snaxx. That’s because this is a collection of unfinished ideas, snapshots of things that might become something else, or maybe just rough drafts that don’t turn into anything. You don’t get any traditional songs, but you do get a sort of glimpse behind the curtain, seeing what a jam or brainstorming session with Mndsgn. might be like. You get everything from some ‘80s R&B and old school hip hop to Dilla and Madlib inspired beats, to some modern downtempo and experimental electronic music and everything in between. This is really a release for the completionists and the production nerds, the ones who can get excited about the nuance of a thirty second beat and think about all of the layers that Mndsgn. can build in that short time. The flip side to that is that to enjoy this collection, you need to be okay with sudden shifts and the fact that things might never develop into anything else, that you’re never going to get that satisfying hook or anything like that. You might get that when the next official album comes, but this is not what Snaxx is. This is a peak inside the creative process and a look at the cutting room floor.

Snaxx certainly wont be for everyone, but for the hardcore fans this will be a nice way to tide yourself over before the next Mndsgn. album. He’s a talented producer, and it’s cool to get a peak at all of the ideas that are swirling around his head.
