Missy D is an emcee from Vancouver, although originally raised in Africa, spending time in Rwanda, Ivory Coast, and Zimbabwe. She’s been going strong as an artist for about the last five years, but it’s been a couple of years since we got more than a single from her. That changes now with her new EP, Yes Mama.

If you need a crash course for Missy D, Yes Mama is a great place to start. The majority of the EP is produced by David Tallarico, with Jay 808 Beats and Mantra Beats contributing a track a piece as well. Together, they help showcase the totality of Missy D’s sound. There’s the late ‘90s hip hop/R&B of “Paint,” the soulful ballad of “Au Revoir,” the modern dance/electronic/Afro Pop sound of “Yes Mama,” or the banging trap beat of “Watch Me.” Whatever the track, Missy D adjusts her delivery, singing and rapping her heart out and matching her voice with a big personality. On the opening track, “Paint,” she lays out a thesis statement as discusses how she channels her pain into her art, and how she hopes to use her music to not only raise herself up, but you as well. She gets vulnerable and breaks down the pain of learning how to say goodbye to in a song like “Au Revoir,” which lets you form a personal attachment to the music. “You” lets you know that while Missy D might be a sensitive artist, you shouldn’t go and think something foolish like you could step to Missy D and not come correct. The real gem of the EP is the title track, where you realize that “Mama” isn’t a reference to herself, but to the Motherland, aka Africa. The track also does a great job of blending more traditional African drumming with some really modern hip hop/dance production, and Missy D comes in on the mic spitting pure fire. It’s just an incredibly well-rounded EP that hits on all the right notes.

If you don’t know, now you’ll know that Missy D is a badass that can do it all on the mic. Yes Mama has her at her most vulnerable, her most fun, and also taking no prisoners and she works her way across six tracks. I already can’t wait for her next project.
