Memphis Reigns is a Bay Area emcee who is more than twenty years into his career, and still going strong as ever, with a bunch of collaborative projects over the last few years, including ones with Sankofa, Kid Forever, and CM. Most recently, he teamed up with D-Mitch to drop Kasan. Now he’s back with a new project with The L and Remshot, The Last Piece.

Remshot is an up-and-coming producer from San Diego who started working with Memphis Reigns a couple of years ago, and then dropped Tokyo Time Machine with him and Shamon Cassette last year. The L is a producer/emcee from Seattle who has also worked with Memphis Reigns in recent years, dropping a single called “I Spit Game” just last year. When you get them together on this album, you can quickly see what drew them all together – a love of West Coast boom bap. Remshot is just dropping a lot of laid back, funky beats, with a lot of bass that just bounces nicely as these two emcee are able to hop on the mic and do their thing. Memphis Reigns leads the way as the veteran of the crew, but The L is no slouch on the mic, and they have a good back and forth over the course of the album. They keep it simple on the mix as well, and by that I mean it’s just a solid mix of trash talking and a few personal rhymes here and there. More than anything, this album is just about having fun and enjoying some classic West Coast hip hop. The only thing that doesn’t quite work is the two tracks towards the end of the album, “Unholy,” and “Super Barrio Brothers,” both of which try to flip some novel pop culture references, but get stuck in this in between space where it doesn’t quite bump on its own, but it doesn’t quite work as a novelty song, either. It’s a minor problem, though, and the rest of the album more than makes up for those two tracks.

The Last Piece is all about three guys who love West Coast hip hop just coming together, feeding off of each other’s vibes, and making some fun music in the process. It will be a fun addition to your summer soundtrack this year.
