Marc Jensen is a producer from Saskatoon that formerly worked under the name Marjen since 2012, releasing projects such as drmn and Dirge, just to name a couple. Now he’s ready to start a new chapter under a new name with a three-song EP, Prem.

Prem is short and sweet, but it does a good job of introducing you to what Jensen is about as a producer. Overall, this is more about tone and atmosphere more than anything else, and he’s creating a dark and moody, droning listening experience with this EP. While all three songs come in around two minutes apiece, he’s giving himself just enough room to develop each track beyond just a beat sample, but he’s really structuring and layering all of his elements enough to take you on a journey within the alloted space. For example, on the closing track, “Closing Credits,” Jensen is creating this eerie soundscape built around this really deliberate drum beat and bass line that make you feel like you’re walking through a haunted house, only to then have this really spooky organ come in to build a simple melody that makes you feel like there is definitely a ghost waiting for you around the corner.

Prem is a smaller scale project, but Marc Jensen is experienced enough as a producer and sure enough about the project to still make it worth your while. It’s eerie and haunting, but it’s also really musical and thoughtfully constructed.
