This is the third installment in Madlib’s Medicine Show series. Here, he comes back as the Beat Konducta and takes us on a trip to Africa.

While this is supposed to be a Beat Konducta joint based on samples from African music from the early ‘70s, this plays out more like a well put together mix-tape. Not that I’m necessarily complaining. It just feels more like a lot of snippets of pan-African records that Madlib occasionally throws a beat under than a complete re-imagining of the music.

My biggest complaint with this volume is the tendency to repeat themes across the mix, both musically and vocally. The good news is, Madlib is one of the ultimate crate diggers, and you can be sure to come across some music that you didn’t know about that will excite you, whether it be jazz, funk, soul, psychedelic, or whatever else comes up on this collection.

I know little beyond Fela Kuti, but I’m willing to learn more about some of the source material being used on this volume. It’s a good mix that’s pretty wide reaching, and aside from a few minor complaints, its quite enjoyable.
