Loden - Lifts for Exits (Extinct)
Written by Chi Chi Thalken on January 18, 2018Loden is a Belgian producer that has released albums on Mush and Circle Into Square. He also worked with Busdriver on his acclaimed album, Beaus$Eros. The last time we heard from him was just back in February of last year, when he released the album Tsar. Now he’s back with another project, Lift For Exits (Extinct).
Over the course of his career, Loden has always kept his listeners on their toes, always switching up his approach with each project, and delivering music that challenges expectations. Lift For Exits (Extinct) is no exception. For this project, Loden has crafted something of a soundtrack for a post-apocalyptic world. By that, I mean that the album is pull of droning, marching drum beats that push the music forward at a deliberate pace, while synthesizers oscillate between some dissonant and eerie compositions and some truly beautiful and lush soundscapes. It’s an album that will seem like it’s just one thing at the beginning, but as it progresses, you start to catch onto all of the subtle variations in composition, along with the shifts in tone, and a bigger picture begins to emerge. It’s the type of album that you can listen to on headphones and really get lost in, and imagine your own story to go along with the rich and challenging compositions that Loden has put together. It’s also an album that works much better as a whole, since everything is carefully sequenced to tell a musical story, and the whole thing really plays off of how the different tracks interact with each other.
Loden has delivered some big projects in the past, but his latest have been really sophisticated and subtle. Lift For Exits (Extinct) is a challenging listen, but it’s also incredibly rewarding if you give it the appropriate attention.
