Lex Leosis is an emcee from Toronto who has been working as a solo artist and as part of the supergroup The Sorority. While her work with The Sorority took up much of her time the past couple years, she’s now back with her first solo album in three years, Mythologies.

For Mythologies, Leosis gets production assists from Andre Paxton, Rainer + Grimm, Kato on the Track, Yondo, Taabu, and Clyde Strokes. Together, they help craft a sound for the album that is a very modern and bass heavy trap/R&B hybrid, one that will sound really nice pumping out of your car speakers. Now the only problem with this style of hip hop is that there are so many artists hopping on this style because it’s popular, and they all rap with the same cadence and don’t put a lot of substance in their words – it just sounds like they are doing hip hop mad libs. The good news with Mythologies is that Leosis is a strong enough emcee that she avoids all of these trappings. This was never going to be a problem for her, and in fact, she shows you just how good this style can sound in the right hands. She’s coming at you with a strong voice and multiple flows that have her dancing around the beats as she talks some shit, but also gets personal as she discusses her sexuality, romantic relationships, and professional life. It’s a really well-rounded approach to the music that makes her very relatable to listeners. She also has a good ear for hooks, creating some songs that will get stuck in your head long after you’re done listening to the album. We also get some nice guest spots, most notably from the fast-rising Snotty Nose Rez Kids, who help bring some heat to “Se Miso.” Most importantly, it just feels like Leosis had a lot of fun making this album, and that joy comes through as you listen to banger after banger.

It might have been a minute since we had a solo album from Lex Leosis, but after all the work she put in with The Sorority, she was ready for the spotlight when it came time for the next solo album. The result of all that work is that Mythologies is her strongest solo album to date.
