Keys Zuna - Keys Zuna
Written by Chi Chi Thalken on March 29, 2018French label Cascade Records has brought us great hip hop and electronic music from around the globe, but their latest offering comes right from Paris. After making their recording debut with their first EP in 2015, the quartet known as Keys Zuna now delivers their first full-length album, which is self-titled.
The quartet features Kiala Ogawa on synthesizers and vocals, Ferdinand Cros on guitar, Jimmy Top on bass, and Hugo Besikian on synthesizers and beats. The group draws upon a myriad of influences, from Afrobeat (Kiala’s dad actually played guitar with Fela Kuti) to disco and funk, to more modern dance and electronic music as well. The result is an album that is ultimately fun and danceable, with a couple of slow jams to round out the sound. Ogawa doesn’t have the biggest voice, but she does have a really great tone and sense of melody. It especially sounds great on slow songs like “Creeping to the Light,” which has this incredibly intimate sound to it, and when Ogawa sings, it sounds like she’s singing directly to you. The group has really good chemistry, and each member finds moments across the album in which they get to add their own unique flavor. Beikian and Top are responsible for forming the backbone of the grooves on the album, which are always in the pocket, and Cros has a knack for throwing in tasty guitar fills at just the right moment to give the album more of a “live” feel to it. When it all comes together, you’ve got this album that is funky-yet-smooth, with great grooves and beautiful vocals that you can get lost in on the dance floor. This album is going to sound great on some hot summer nights.
Keys Zuna are still relatively young as a group, but they are really finding their footing with their self-titled album. They’ve established some really great chemistry with each other, and laid done some really great R&B in the process. I can’t wait to see where they go from here.
