At the beginning of the year, Twin Cities vocalist K.Raydio started a series of releases called “Sync,” which are demo EPs consisting of songs written, produced, and recorded by K.Raydio herself. As March rolls around, we now get the third entry in the series, 3:33.

One of the interesting things about this project is that over the course of the year, we get to see artistic growth, experimentation, and development out of K.Raydio. In just the third installment in the series, I’m already seeing a broadening of styles, and I’m seeing more confidence in her abilities as she also trusts herself to let there be longer instrumental sections to the EPs. “Marty McFly” gives us a great soulful summer anthem about love long past, with great jazzy vocals and harmonies and a killer hook to the production. “Clueless” is more dissonant and aggressive in tone, and K.Raydio gets real sassy on the mic as she takes down her haters. “Dusty Apartment” is a wonderful warm and intimate hip hop/R&B track about finding inspiration in the mundane, maybe the ordinary place that you’re in right now. “Marbles” sees K.Raydio really stretching as a producer, with this fascinatingly odd percussion sound that runs through the background alongside moments of standard drum kit sounds, while classical guitar drives the melodic portion of the song, which fluctuates between tension and calmness.

The whole EP comes together to give a nice peak at what makes K.Raydio special. It used to be her charisma and soulful voice with great tone and control of her melodic lines, but now it’s so much more as her songwriting and production skills continue to evolve. It will be fascinating and exciting to watch this series unfold over the course of the rest of the year.
