bRavenous is an artist originally from Halifax, now based in Calgary. He got started in the late ‘90s as part of the group CVG, but he’s been working as a solo artist for several years now. In March of this year, we got his latest project, Ghosts of Rockingham, an album looking back at where he came from. Now he’s right back with the follow up album, Ghosts of Rockingham Vol 2.

If you listened to the first volume, you have a pretty good idea of what to expect from this volume, which is plenty of ‘90s East Coast-inspired hip hop. There is just a lot of great of great soul-sampling boom bap and playful and nostalgic rhymes on this album, which makes it very easy to listen to. Over the course of the album, we also get a lot of familiar guests who join in on the fun, with Solomon Childs, Justo the MC, Taichichi, Hermitofthewoods, Sean Juan, Max Deuce, Radar, Ghettosocks, Christ Sampson, Wordburglar, Thrust OG, Dragonfli Empire, and Jay Ross all hopping on. Everyone adds their own unique flavor, but Wordburglar drops some especially fun and playful rhymes on “The Way” that will have you pressing pause and rewind to catch a couple of his punchlines. Of course, none of this matters without bRavenous leading the way with his charisma, honest lyricism, and passion, giving you the heart and soul of the album. Because of this, you get an album that immediately feels like it’s been a part of your library for a while, like an old friend you just met. The only minor problem with the album is the inclusion of a couple skits, while not bad, don’t really hit and kill the momentum between tracks. It only happens a couple of times, though, and before you know it you’re right back to having fun with some classic boom bap.

Ghosts of Rockingham Vol 2 picks up right where bRavenous left us in March and carries us across the finish line. The album takes a look back on bRavenous’ roots growing up in Canada and really lets you see how much he loves hip hop. That love is so infectious, and with all of his friends joining in on the fun, you get an album that is very enjoyable.
