2012 has been a good year for BoomBaptist. As part of an emerging Austin beat scene, the producer has seen his stock rise as he put out a series of unreleased music he’s mad over the last several years, contributed beats on Muneshine’s excellent album, There Is Only Today, and he toured the Midwest with the likes of Therm One, Leonard Dstroy and Raj Mahal. Now, with the third volume of The Lost Files, he picks up right where the last one left off, and once again delivers the goods.

If you’ve been following this series, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting into - quality instrumental hip hop. For those unfamiliar with BoomBaptist, feel free to jump in right here and catch up later. There isn’t any sharp departure in style on this volume, and he already established a pretty wide range of styles in the first two collections, and he simply continues to build upon that base. There’s the disco-soul of the opening track, “Kentucky Fried Critters,” the bongo-heavy Latin funk of “Chupacabra Striptease,” the eerie film score vibe on “Haunted Carnival,” the classic soul boom bap of “Crushed Velvet,” and the quiet storm of “OG Champion Theme.” It’s all very well developed, and everything flows very well over the course of the album. It gives you a nice mix of instrumental hip hop that you could play at the club and some gentler songs that you can get lost in on your headphones.

The best part of The Lost Files is that while these have all been quite enjoyable, this is just the music that BoomBaptist had in his back pocket, stuff that was recorded years ago. If this is what he was doing in 2006 and it was this well developed and produced, I can’t wait until he drops some new new music on us. I bet it’s good.
