Angelenah - I Don't Regret a Thing
Written by Chi Chi Thalken on October 11, 2022Angelenah is the Minneapolis-based, Chicago born-and-raised artist that you probably best know for her work in the groups Rapperchicks and more recently, Big $ilky. She released a single as a solo artist in 2020, but 2018 was really the last time we heard a proper project from her, when she dropped the EP, Sore but Grateful. Now she’s back and ready to kick things up a notch with her new EP, I Don’t Regret a Thing.
From the opening notes of the opening track, “Just Getting Started,” Angelenah is hitting you with so much power and confidence in her voice, you’ll be scratching your head and wondering why she hasn’t gotten more time in the spotlight. She’s clearly ready for it, as demonstrated by this EP. With tracks produced by The Omy’s, Chason Rice, Budah Tye, and TheBeatPlug, the overall vibe of the project falls somewhere between neo-soul and modern R&B, all delivered with a hip hop edge to it. Angelenah is singing more than she’s rapping on this project (although she can kill it in both arenas), and she’s doing it with a deliberate pacing and strong tone to her voice that is calmly and confidently telling everyone else to take a seat while she says her piece. It should also be said that this EP is strictly for the grown folks. Don’t play this in front of your kids unless you want to answer some questions. Seriously, though, the impressive thing here is that Angelenah is able to walk that line of being sexual and owning it and not apologizing for it, while never feeling like she’s being dirty only for the sake of it, or just trying to shock you. It’s more about being honest about who she is and claiming space as a woman with wants and needs. More than anything, though, this is about a woman with a great voice locking in for six songs and giving us some of the best material of her career to date.
I Don’t Regret a Thing is hopefully the start of a new chapter for Angelenah as a solo artist, and a strong foundation from which to build upon. She’s stepping into the spotlight by herself for the first time in years, and she is more than ready for it.
