Angel Davanport is a name you might be familiar with through her work with Rapperchicks alongside Psalm One and Ill-esha, or possibly through her guest appearance of P.O.S.’s last solo album, Chill, Dummy. She now steps out on her own for a three-song EP, Sore, But Grateful.

For the three songs on the EP, we get beats from Naki the Beatman, Ill-Esha, and The Hood Internet, and all three are bangers. There’s a slightly different style to each, with Naki bringing the trap to “Treat ‘Em,” Ill-Esha bringing the EDM to “Bender,” and The Hood Internet brining both the Drill and Juke influence to “Jesus,” but the common thread throughout all of them is the energy. This EP is short, but it hits hard and doesn’t let up until it’s over. While the beats are banging, it’s Angel on the mic who doesn’t just match the level of the production, but actually raises the level just a notch and takes everything over the edge. She’s a charismatic dynamo on the mic, someone who demands your complete attention while she’s rapping or singing (she’s great at both), and someone who isn’t afraid of confrontation with her lyrics. You need look no further than the closing track, “Jesus,” which has Davanport declaring over and over “Oh, my pussy Jesus!” With Sophia Eris joining her on the track, we get the best unapologetically dirty song of the year, which manages to accomplish the feat of being absolutely filthy and self-empowering at the same time. Really, the only problem with this EP is that it’s far too short, and because of that we don’t get enough variety from Davanport, who I know to be a very versatile artist.

Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long before her next release, because Sore, But Grateful is just enough to get you excited before it’s all over. Angel Davanport accomplishes the most important tasks, though, grabbing your attention, showing you her talent, and never wavering in her confidence.
