Allmos - Sound Affects, Vol. 1
Written by Chi Chi Thalken on December 4, 2017Allmos, also known as Allen Cole, makes up one half of the Brooklyn duo known as The Stuyvesants. We last heard from them in July, when they released their album Finally. Now Allmos is back as a solo artist to launch a new series for Portland label Fresh Selects, as he drops Sound Affects, Vol. 1.
Now if you listened to Finally, you know that The Stuyvesants found some funk and grit to spice up their instrumental music. For Sound Affects, Allmos scales that back and gets really smooth with things. This is about as Quiet Storm as an instrumental album can get, with warm bass lines and gentle keyboard melodies leading the way. This is an album that is more about mood and general tone than any particular standout singles, and as a result, it’s best if the album is listened to in one sitting from front to back. It’s not anything that hasn’t been done before, but it’s being done well here, so it doesn’t matter all that much. It’s an album that rewards with repeat listens, as its all about the subtleties, and there are all sorts of little pieces that are easy to miss the first time through. It’s an album that’s easy to get lost in, just letting all of the smooth grooves wrap you up like a warm blanket.
I don’t know what else is planned for the Sound Affects series, but we’ve been promised at least one more volume. What I do know is that Allmos have started things off with some smooth R&B meant for the grown and sexy.
